1Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus
Over the last few days we have been looking at the subject of walking and we've covered quite a lot of ground (as you do)!
So today I feel we should pause for a moment. Take it easy. Have a rest. Take in the scenery!
I would like us to sit down for a few moments and give God thanks.
Thanks for our journey so far. Thanks for what He is doing in our lives right now. And thanks for what He will lead us to in the future.
The picture above shows a park bench. If you're feeling really energetic and creative, why not print out the prayer below, take a walk (or drive) to your favourite quiet spot and say the prayer out loud in the open air. I'm going to do that myself! But that's optional. If your armchair is calling, squeeze a teabag and put your feet up!
So let's talk to God for a moment.

Oh Lord, it's so nice to sit down for a few moments just to take stock of my life!
Thank you for this moment. Thank you for 'NOW'! You've brought me this far in my life. I acknowledge that. I can see where your hand has been leading me. The times when I thought I couldn't go on, but You were there, sometimes without me knowing it at the time.
For that I'm grateful.
Your faithfulness brings me to my knees.
Your forgiveness brings me to your feet!
I'd like to rededicate my walk, my journey, to You. I cannot know what the future holds. If I'm honest there are times when concern and worry hits me in the chest and I feel I'm colliding with the cold unknown.
Thank you for caring when I feel damaged by life. When my feet are travel weary and the crossroads tempts me with too many options and possibilities.
Give me discernment Lord, for life's highway calls for wisdom and experience. Make me so sensitive to Your voice that I will know beyond the shadow of a doubt that it is You I am hearing above the sound of the storm.
As I sit here a few moments longer, my heart grateful for Your presence near my chair, fill me afresh with the power of Your Spirit. Refresh me with the dew of goodness. And, when I at last get up to go and carry on with my day, stay beside me Father, for without You my walk would mean nothing, and the scenery...........well, it would have no colour and no life.
Thank You Lord for staying. It means so very much.

Hebrews 4:14-16
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Yesterday we touched on the fact that even though we become Christians and receive salvation and forgiveness of sins, we still may have certain things that we really struggle with.
Today's verse shows us that we are not serving a God who is cold towards our pain and struggles, but we serve a loving God whose Son went through temptations of many kinds Himself and therefore is more than just understand of our situations, He will actually STAND WITH US in them and help us in our time of need. Praise His Name.
See our picture for today. A beautiful photograph of a father and his child, walking together, probably talking to each other on the way. The child asking childlike questions, the father replying with the wisdom of years yet also with a deep understanding of how to communicate with his little one in a way that he or she will be able to understand.
This is how Jesus is with us. He's saying to you today, "Approach my throne of grace WITH CONFIDENCE, because I understand, and I can meet you at your point of need". Jesus will never be unapproachable. He is also 'unshockable'!
If you are experiencing problems today that seem to have been with you for a long time and you know you need help, sit down first of all and just acknowledge to the Lord that you can't go on any longer the way things are. Be assured of His love for you and know He is right there with you.
But I feel I'm speaking to someone today who needs even more than that. I feel there is someone who is unable even to sit down in the loneliness and isolation of their problem because they themselves are lost for words in the situation.
Please don't let that put you off getting help. If you have someone you can talk to about it, call them NOW and ask them to come and talk with you. If you have no one or you need more advice about how to go about getting help, please get in touch with me and I will do all I can to help. Not just spiritually but practically, because that's often what we need too.
If you are reading this and you are already a Christian, look at verse 14 again where it says, "Hold firmly to the faith we profess". Don't stop believing or professing your faith just because you are having problems or feel unworthy to come before God. That's not God's way of looking at you. He is your Father. You are His child. He will still walk with you all the way.
In closing, whoever you are and whatever obstacle is obstructing your walk in life, get help TODAY!

You will get through to a little room in a small, happy home, where there is more than likely to be a couple of cats dozing on the chairs and the kettle will no doubt just have boiled. Philippians 3:13
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it (Christ's goal for him). But this one thing I do:Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead.
I was asked a very good question a couple of days ago. It was this:
Why is it that some people, when they become Christians, still seem to carry on in the same old ways?
This is my answer (in part, as it will be covered over 2 or 3 days) :

There is a wonderful old gospel hymn that begins like this: There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Emmanuel's veins, and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
When we become Christians/get saved, whichever term you are more familiar with, we are 'washed in the blood of Jesus Christ'. This does not mean that all of a sudden we are the most perfect, complete, squeaky clean angels and we have 'arrived' and will sin no more!! It means that the 'stains' on our life from former sin will be removed and remembered no more but we will be responsible for the way we live our 'new life'.
For some people this will be more of a struggle than for others. A lot of people who come to Christ have problems which need special help and attention. Unfortunately some people who do give their lives to Christ do not fully realize how much work is still required. This often happens if the person is not receiving the proper Bible teaching in their church.
Paul realized the importance of focusing on Jesus and looking ahead, not back! When we receive new life in Christ it is really just the beginning of a journey which we must trust the Lord to lead us in.
Notice what Paul also says in 1 Corinthians 13:11. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man I put childish ways behind me.
To sum this up let's think of it this way:
When we become a Christian the stains of our old life are completely washed away. God will never throw your past back in your face! Only the devil and the insensitive will do that to you!
When we begin our new walk we must not ourselves look back or we may fall into temptation to 'act like the child we used to be'.
Straining towards what is ahead may sometimes feel like a strain but it's much less harmful than a guilty stain.
Look to Jesus and press on without looking back!

Think on this today:You will not change if you stay in condemnation for the last thing you did wrong!

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.
We're still walking!!
Today we're going to have a look at how we can walk a straight path and we're looking at these two great verses from Proverbs to help steer us in the right direction.
The first thing I'd like you to consider is this:
To walk a straight path we need to be led. That is the nature of being a follower!
Let's look at four ways, taken directly from these verses, that we can walk a straight path.
1. Trust in the Lord
This means to 'commit your way to Him'. Give Him your life. Give Him your path. Let Him see that without Him you cannot see!
2. With all of your heart.
Remember how David challenged Solomon to serve God with 'wholehearted devotion'. Do not allow any portion of your heart to be devoted to anything that will not bring you life and health. A few days ago we looked at the verse from Revelation that speaks of 'being neither hot nor cold'. Part of our life lived here, another part somewhere else. God is looking for wholehearted devotion because with anything less we will not even have the strength to walk the straight path He wants to lead us in.
3. Acknowledge Him.
Be ever mindful of God and serve with faithfulness and willingness. To acknowledge God does not mean to give Him a customary nod of our head as if passing Him in a busy street. It means bowing down to Him, right where we are, and throughout our walk with Him. Give God the glory due to Him.
4. And he will make your paths straight.
If you faithfully follow God He will faithfully lead you. He does not want you to be harmed or to become weary. He will show you where to put your feet in your walk with Him and help you to press on to reach the goal and win the prize He has set out for you.
Spend a few minutes looking at the picture that accompanies today's reflection. Picture yourself on that straight path and reach out your hand to God afresh today so He can continue to lead you.

God loves to lead in paths of peace.

Philippians 3:14
I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.
We are looking at the same verse today as we did yesterday because I want to highlight another aspect of walking, or 'pressing on towards the goal to win the prize' as Paul wrote here.
So yesterday we looked at what walking really is. It's movement. It requires effort on our part. It is good for the body, mind and spirit.
Spiritually speaking, walking is following God in obedience, along the path He has mapped out for us, with the goal of winning the prize for which He has called us to in Christ Jesus.
Paul uses this symbolic picture of prize winning because he knew they would be able to visualize it. The winner of Greek races received a wreath of leaves and sometimes a cash award. For the Christian there is the award of everlasting glory.
What I'd like to highlight today is the fact that walking, although good for us in so many ways, can sometimes be difficult, precarious, visually challenging and a little scary.
Take a look at today's picture above. Someone walking through a wooded area in the fog.
Not ideal conditions, especially for a novice in an unknown area. But of course, it could also pose problems for experienced walkers.
That is how it will sometimes seem on our walk with God. We will come to places on the road where we are unsure of the way ahead. Tiredness and fatigue may set in, making it almost painful to continue. We may reach a crossroads and have to stand there for some time to seek spiritual direction or find a little more strength to step out in faith.
There will be times when it will become harder to keep going. We must understand that in our walk with God these things are going to happen, but, like Paul, we must be encouraged that by keeping our eyes on God and on the goal of everlasting life with Him, we can make it through the fog, through the pain and through uncertainties.
Hebrews 12 verses 2-3 says this:
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning it's shame,and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
If your walk is proving difficult, if you are tired or at a crossroads, take time to rest in the Lord. Don't stumble ahead in your own strength. Do whatever it takes today to begin to step out again, not in fear, but in faith.

Philippians 3:14
I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.
For the next five or six days I want us to look at various aspects of 'walking' and what it really means to us spiritually. So we're starting today with the words of Paul, 'pressing on' to reach his goal in Christ.
One good thing about thinking about walking is that we can easily picture it. Probably the first thing we notice is that it requires movement, and generally speaking, this is in a forward direction! Walking means going somewhere. Starting off right where we are and 'pressing on' to a destination.
Now I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of walking! I used to love it. But somehow these days I'm full of good intentions whilst clutching the car keys! But I do realize that walking is good for the body and the mind and the main reason is because it involves movement!
Walking in the Spirit is the same in that way. It involves movement too. It means stepping out from where we are in our faith and consciously heading for somewhere up ahead. Making progress! Gaining ground!
When we start our journey of faith we must first acknowledge that God has a path for us. If we have put our life in His hands we must allow Him to lead.
It is not possible to walk in the Spirit and do what you've always done. It is not possible to walk and stand still at the same time either.
If you always do what you've always done, you'll always have what you've always had.
Paul spoke of 'straining towards what is ahead', and forgetting what is behind.
So, for our first look at walking today let's try to spend a few minutes considering these things:
1. Have I started out walking with God or am I still walking on my own and making up my own directions as I go along?
2. Am I willing to acknowledge that God's path for me may sometimes take me by surprise?

Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive men their sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
God has the power to heal body and soul.
It is His Spirit moving among people and through people that changes hurt into healing, grief into gladness, brokenness into wholeness and sin into salvation.
Most of us have an ache or a pain somewhere; a spot or a stress symptom we live with. But do we live with it, or do we seek help for the problem?
What's the first thing many of us do at the sign of a cold or flu virus? Get out the Lemsip, reach for the Paracetamol to relieve the headache, lozenges for the larynx! Now there's nothing wrong with that at all. We all want to feel well. We want to breathe easily, be free from pain and have the ability to get on with our lives.
As long as we remember, God has the power to heal body and soul.
Now let's look at another aspect of healing.
I wonder how many of us know of a situation, perhaps personal, where pain is caused due to unforgiveness and hurt?
Are we as individuals holding a grudge or harbouring any resentment towards anybody?
Any of us feeling a bit fragile because we've been wronged by someone and there seems no way of reconciliation?
Remember, God has the power to heal body and soul.
Whether we are feeling pain through physical or emotional problems, we have a reaction to it. If we're sick, we will do almost anything to be well, whether it's swallow a tablet or swallow our pride. But what happens when the pain is caused because someone has wronged us, hurt our feelings or made us feel unloved?
We more often than not build a wall, put up a 'no trespassing' sign, refuse to talk about it ( at least with the person who has wronged us), and the whole thing becomes a big ugly sore, an open wound that we don't want anyone to look at, never mind touch.
We become disabled, in the sense that we are unable to feel well and free, and certainly unable to be who God has called us to be and do what He is asking us to do.
The power of forgiveness is immeasurable. Jesus challenges us as His followers to forgive others who have wronged us or hurt us. That may seem like a simple act, but anyone who has struggled with pain, anger and hurt knows that it takes enormous emotional effort to forgive. But the wonderful thing is, when we do that, TWO people become free. Ourselves and the person who wronged us.
Our text today clearly tells us that if we do not forgive people when they sin against us, then we ourselves will not be forgiven. But if we do forgive, we will know God's forgiveness too.
I don't know what pain you bear today. Only God can see your wounds. But I know God has the power to heal body and soul. To bring wholeness, peace and healing. And I can only guess here, but I imagine all of us need at least one prayer answered on that level.
Think about forgiveness today. Think about people getting freed. It could be you!

Revelation 3:16
So because you are luke-warm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
Well, this is the last verse in our '3:16 portfolio'! Quite a verse to end with too!
Revelation is probably one of the most difficult to understand books of the Bible, for various reasons. There is a lot of 'symbolic speech' which requires interpretation and a deeper knowledge of the time of writing than most of us have been able to acquire. But let's not be put off by that and try to take this verse as it seems to have been meant.
The writer of Revelation, widely believed to be John, is encouraging the faithful to resist demands of emperor worship which was beginning to be enforced by Roman authorities. John is revealing that the time for the final showdown between God and satan is fast approaching and they must stand firm, right to the end.
Now he speaks to the church at Laodicea, the wealthiest city in Phrygia during Roman times. It's major weakness, however, was it's lack of an adequate water supply. And this is perhaps what prompted the 'lukewarm' symbolism here, being neither 'hot' nor 'cold'. 'Hot' probably referrred to the nearby hot, medicinal waters at Heirapolis, as the church in Laodicea provided neither healing for the spiritually sick nor refreshment for the spiritually weary.
Now that may seem like a long-winded explanation to you but it is important to see it as it was intended. The Christians were being accused of showing a lukewarmness in their deeds. Something that will not be tolerated by God. When 'the final showdown' occurs, only those seen to be faithful to the end, those with 'both feet firmly in God's kingdom' will be counted by God as His own.
Perhaps now, at the end of our '3:16 journey' is as good a time as any to make sure we know how firmly our feet are planted in the Kingdom of God. Perhaps there have been things which we've found lately have been preoccupying our time or attention. Maybe we've just felt weak and not been in the Word of God as much as we should.
Let's finish with a prayer to get us back on track.
Heavenly Father, I realize more and more how much you love me and how much you just want what's best for me. You are always there for me. You care for me in a way no one else ever could. I'm sorry for the times when I don't give you my best. Forgive me for making excuses that I know you can see through! I would like to take this opportunity right now to ask you to help me stand strong and firm and not be swayed by earthly things. I want my life's journey to be exactly your plan for me, so that in 'the final showdown' I can be counted as one of your own.
Thank you for your mercy and your grace upon my life. In Jesus name. Amen

1 John 3:16
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
This is one of those verses which is so simple yet so profound. I often think this verse should carry on from John 3:16. Although both verses are complete in themselves, there is something truly affirming when the two are read together. My personal opinion of course, but read them for yourself. You may feel the same way.
This is how we know what love is...
This is a miracle. It's love.....but not as we know it! It is Divine love which can only come from the Father heart of God. It is a love that was from the beginning and will be until the end. A love so pure, so extra-ordinary, so all-embracing, that God could give His Son Jesus and Jesus could give His own life, so that we, through knowing God's love could learn how to love one another.
Remember, this letter from John was written to Christians. He continually uses the phrase, 'Dear children', meaning 'children of God', believers.
I wonder just how well we do when it comes to showing God's love. When it comes to sharing our time, our possessions, our.....love? It is only as we spend more time in God's presence and allow His love to completely take over our hearts that we can hope to love as He loves.
In the meantime, let us strive to do the best we can as often as we can, for it is only through loving each other the 'Jesus' way that we can hope to glorify God while there is still time.
Ask God to show you new ways of showing His love.

1 Peter 3:16
.....keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
Health warning! Gossip kills!
It kills good relationships. It kills people's confidence. It kills positive intentions.
But the good news is, there is an antidote to the effects of gossip!
It's called 'keeping a clear conscience as you walk in God's ways'.
The world is always looking for ways to trip people up reputation wise. Some people, journalists for example, make a living out of it. It's one of the reasons I don't buy newspapers.
The apostle Peter has been speaking about suffering for doing what is good. He is urging the Christians to live right and not fear those who will speak against them. He encourages them to set apart Christ as Lord in their hearts and not be swayed by what others may say.
Some people thrive on the downfall of others. And those who do not understand the joy of living for the Lord can often be very malicious in their attack on believers.
But look what Peter says here:
'keep a clear conscience so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander'.
The Christian who lives their life in the light of God and shows a loving attitude towards those who gossip against them, will show their opponent's attitude in a bad light. When it is obvious that what has been said is completely unfounded the person who has spoken badly of another must be silenced.
If you are aware of anyone speaking badly of you the best thing to do is make sure there is no truth in their accusations. If you are a Christian, and feel you are being slandered because of it, remember Peter also said that to suffer for doing right is a blessing. (1 Peter:3:14)
And also, pray for those who speak against you. They do not realize the pettiness of their actions.
And one final item on the checklist:
How's your personal health regarding gossip? Don't get hooked on hype!

James 3:16
For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
If you ever have to ask yourself the question whether God is a God of order or not, just think back to Genesis and the story of creation. Think of how well organized God was. Everything in it's place, on the right day, at the right time and even a day at the end of it all to have a rest!
We're not so good at keeping things in order. We seem to have too many battles on our hands these days. There's a very real sense of 'jostling around for position' in the world.
And who would have thought a few years back that men would one day have to be seen to be wearing the trendiest MOISTURISER! What's that one about?
Women found their voice then began carrying it up a ladder!
And now it seems, when they have a baby, the first question is not, 'Is it a boy or a girl?', it's, 'Could you pass my size zero jeans over please to see if they fit me now?'
I cannot imagine how it feels to be envious of a pile of bones held together by a skimpy Versace dress!
I'm not against anyone wanting to make the most of their life. Not at all. In fact I would encourage anyone to be the best they can be. But hasn't the world gone a little 'ambition crazy'! Are we not just allowing values and standards to slip to an all time low?
This verse of the Bible warns against envy and selfish ambition. And for good reason. Where you find these things you also find disorder and every evil practice.
Disorder and evil. Not harmony and peace. Not love and compassion. But disorder and evil.
The only way we can try to redress the balance is to pray that the Holy Spirit of God will visit our land in a mighty way. Of course, people who already know the Lord should also be doing all they can to show a better way to live. Can I encourage you today to spend a few minutes searching your own heart to see if there is anything in your life that could bring about disorder and disharmony.
And pray for your village or community. Ask God to shine His light on areas of darkness so men and women can come to know how to live in peace with one another.
May God's peace rest on you today.

Hebrews 3:16
Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?
This verse is part of a passage of Scripture which begins in verse 7 under the heading, " Warning Against Unbelief". The writer of the letter to the Hebrews is warning the people not to turn away from God if they hear His voice. Turning away in rebellion from God is to turn away from choosing life and this will lead to death. This was what happened to some of the Israelites who came out of Egypt. Although they had heard God's promise concerning Canaan, they refused to believe in His promise and they became a rebellious people. Consequently those who rebelled did not see the promised land.
I find it rather sad when I hear people talk of the state the world is in today. They go on about rebellious children and teenagers, they shake their heads at those who get themselves into trouble and often blame it on one-parent families and politics! If you find that hard to believe just read some newspapers and watch some TV. (Not too much though, it doesn't make good soul-food!)I know many people who feel that Christian Assembly should be re-introduced into schools. I think they have a valid point. Christian teaching and Biblical truth is so far from people's minds today that rebellion has almost become fashionable. Even ASBO's seem to have become a 'must-have accessory' to some!
I'd like to encourage you to sit down today at some point and take stock of your life.
Here are some things to consider as you do that:
1. If turning away from God is rebellion, how would He describe your life?
2. When did you last hear from God?
3. Can you see God's promised land through your 'spiritual binoculars'?
4. Who do you trust with your life?
If God is your Father and Jesus is your Saviour you're on the right track and your life is heading somewhere good! If you're not sure where you are right now, try to speak to someone who you know to be a Christian and ask them what to do to give your life to God.
If you do not know any Christians, contact me and I will be happy to speak to you about it.
Finally, don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, especially if it involves eternal life!
Who were they who heard and rebelled?
Those who NEVER SAW the PROMISED LAND!

2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
This is a great verse to follow on from yesterday's healing testimony and I must say I am really enjoying going through all these '3:16' verses.
At the time that this verse was written a lot of the New Testament hadn't been written so this mostly refers to the Old Testament scriptures.
Paul is affirming God's active involvement in the writing of Scripture and I'd like to share with you a couple of reasons why I find that so exciting.
First of all, when speaking of being 'God-breathed' we should remind ourselves that this is the same breath that 'spoke the earth' into being. Think about that for a moment. Words of creation fell from the breath of God and oceans, mountains, stars, galaxies, light and everything else in nature we can see came into being. That's awesome, powerful and miraculous!
And after God created the man from the dust of the earth He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)
We have been given God-breathed Scripture to teach people about God and show them that He has a special and specific plan for their lives.
We can also use this Scripture (the Bible) to show people where they may be going wrong in life and help correct their situation with love and encouragement.
God also wants us to use His God-breathed Scripture to help train people to live God's way, so they can walk in His righteousness and be fully equipped to do His work and live within His will for their lives.
There is immense power in the Bible because God's breath is in it and on it. The power can never diminish because the Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. ( Hebrews 13:8 )
Can I just encourage you today to literally take God at His Word. Whatever it is you need, whatever you are believing God for, remember that His Word is POWERFUL because His breath has made it a LIVING Word. It can bring LIFE to you. It can HEAL you. It can equip you to do what God has called you to do.
Thank God that, even in a world where lives, homes, communities and nations fall apart, there is a LIVING HOPE for all who will believe in God-breathed Scripture.

1 Timothy 3:16
Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.
This verse is talking about Jesus! Notice it says, "He was vindicated by the Spirit". That means the Holy Spirit enabled Him to drive out demons ( Matthew 12:28 ) and perform miracles. It was the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.
I am thrilled to be able to bring you a word of personal testimony which shows that the Holy Spirit is still enabling miracles today.
For a very long time now I have had restricted movement of my arms caused by a painful problem in my shoulders. On my right shoulder I have in the past had injections and most recently it is my left shoulder that has not been working properly and causing considerable pain.
I had planned to visit my sister Anne (MacDonald) today and asked if she would pray for me. Anne has been called by the Lord into a ministry of healing so I knew I was in safe hands! After we had shared a little fellowship together I sat in what is appropriately called the 'prayer chair' and Anne laid her hands on my shoulder and began to pray. There was a wonderful sense of the presence of God and we both knew that the Holy Spirit was with us. (Remember, it is the same Holy Spirit that enabled Jesus to perform miracles!)
After Anne had prayed we stayed in the quietness of the Spirit for a few minutes then I got up as I had an appointment to keep. Once I got home, I lay down for a rest. About an hour passed and I got up, changed into another t-shirt and then...............that was when I noticed something wonderful had taken place!
When I put on my t-shirt I was able to move my arm upwards, outwards, across and down. This had been impossible for me for about 2 years at least! I kept doing it just to prove I could!! That was about 3 hours ago and I am still moving my arm in all those directions and I know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the Lord used my sister today to perform a miracle.
There was no ritual or ceremony. Nothing fancy, nothing contrived.
There was simply 2 believing Christians, a prayer of faith and thanksgiving, a confidence that Jesus still heals today, and the presence of the Holy Spirit working through Anne as she laid her hands on the area of my body that was sick.
I would like to encourage you to believe in an amazing Lord who still heals today. To know Him and to know what it is to sit in His presence is an awesome thing. To be prayed for by someone who is obedient to the Lord in their particular area of ministry is, I believe, a privilege.
Draw close to the Lord today and ask Him to strengthen you in mind, body and spirit.

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
Paul wrote this second letter to the church of the Thessalonians for three main reasons.
1. To encourage the beievers there who were being persecuted.
2. To urge the Thessalonians to be steadfast and work to put food on the table.
3. To correct a misunderstanding concerning the return of Jesus Christ.
Paul begins his letter as he so often does with a blessing of grace and peace to the people.He tells them how much he thanks God for them because their faith is growing and their love for each other is increasing.Then he begins to talk to them about the time when Jesus is revealed from Heaven. This is where the misunderstanding lay.
Paul continues to speak to the people about the coming of the Lord, but he is always careful to let them know he is praying for them and gives them words of encouragement along the way.
Towards the end of the letter he urges them to stand firm in the faith and warns them against idleness. And, in true Paul style, he finishes on a blessing of the peace of the Lord to them.
This was Paul's distinguising mark at the end of his letter. As a man who normally dictated his letters, this was his very own personal touch.
We live in a world so full of commercialism, 'instant access', information at the touch of a button and all those impersonal things. I love to look at handwriting from centuries past because it was an artform. It was beautiful and treasured.
Is there something you do that is your 'distinguishing mark'? If not, ask the Lord to give you something and use it to bless people you meet or contact. I thank God for Paul, because his writing still blesses me today. Even though his personal touch was just a few squiggles at the end of a page!

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing hymns, psalms and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
Yesterday we looked at how important it is to 'live up to' the truth that we have already attained. Carry that thought with you today as we look at this verse from Colossians.
It begins by saying, 'let the word of Christ dwell in you richly'. This refers particularly to the teachings of Christ which, at the time of Paul's writing to the church at Colosse was transmitted orally. There is also an indication here that this included the Old Testament as well as the new.I'll come to that in a moment.
See how Paul uses this lovely word 'dwell' here. "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another....."
To 'dwell' means to 'take up residence'. It implies not just 'residing' but 'abiding'. Paul is encouraging the Colossians to know the word of Christ, allow it to 'take up residence in you' and use it to 'teach and correct each other', not just with a quick word here and there but from the overflowing of the word that abides in you.
He then goes on to say,"..as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God'.
'Psalms' here refers to Old Testament psalms, and can also mean a song which has been recently composed. A 'hymn' was a song of praise to God and was especially used in times of celebration. And a 'song' was used to remember the wonderful acts of God and included much praise to Him for those acts.
So if we recall what we read yesterday and put it alongside today's word we can see how important the truth of the word and the using of that word really is.
Each time we learn something new in the word of God, we should 'KEEP' that word. We should learn it so well that it is impossible to be separated from it. It should 'take up residence' within us so we always have it right there at the right time. If we don't, we run the risk of settling for a solution to life's problems that are easily available but not lasting.
We should also be using the word of Christ to help each other on our journey.
And, whether we think we can sing or not, we should always be ready with words which lift up the name of Jesus and tell of God's wonderful acts. Remembering what God has done will always help you remember just how much He CAN do. God's wonderful acts does not have to be PAST TENSE!
So just to put all this together in one place, think of these things like this:
You have access to the word of Christ which can set people free and give them hope and courage.That word should be 'residing' in you so that wherever you go or whoever you meet, you are ready to share that word. And don't forget to bring songs to each other that exalt and praise God for all He has done and all He will do.
Be hungry for the word of Christ.
Be filled with the word of Christ.
Be generous in sharing the word of Christ.

Philippians 3:16
Let us live up to what we have already attained.
Here we have Paul speaking to the church at Philippi about 'pressing on to reach the goal'.
In fact he uses the imagery of someone running a race to win a prize and emphasizes 'pressing on' to reach that goal.
So why does he speak about living up to what we have already attained? Well, have you ever noticed just how difficult it is to be consistent? As human beings we are in fact rather unpredictable. Our moods change. We sometimes feel physically weak. If it's raining we don't want to get out of bed! What 'works' for us one day may not on a different day!
In our walk with God we have choices. We can come to a point where we feel we have learned a lot and then not move from that point ever again. It's spiritual stagnation really. Our boots seem to get pulled down into the mud. And we're stuck!
Paul has realized for himself that the only way to live the Christian life according to God's Word and will is to make sure we are always moving forwards. It's not enough just to make sure we're standing still, because that's not going anywhere! We need to move forwards at a steady pace.
But there's one very important thing to take note of here.
And that is, what does it really mean to 'live up to what we have already attained'?
It means we must put into practice the truth that we have already learned and comprehended. To put it another way, we are responsible for the truth we currently possess. That is one of the most exciting revelations we could ever have, and I'll explain why I say that. Here's an example.
My sister and I are both Christians. We read the same Bible, believe in the same God, we even enjoy the same styles of worship and Christian music and each of us is very supportive of the other's gifts and area of ministry. Now here's the interesting part. Although we share so much that, in essence, is the same, neither of us is responsible for the truth which the other one possesses. In other words, God will have revealed certain things to my sister which will be necessary for her 'calling' or area of ministry and vice verse. We can learn from each other, and that's good. But it is the responsibility of each individual Christian to live up to what they have already attained and use the truth they have been given to change the lives of those who cross their path.
Whether we've been a Christian for a long time or just been on the journey for a short while, we will all possess some of the truth of God and His Word. Let us make sure that we LIVE UP TO what we already know. Godly truth is precious. If we possess it, we should be striving to use it wisely because we have been given it for a reason that is personal to our own individual walk.
And as we walk, we learn, and walk a little further, all the while taking responsibility for the truth we possess.

Ephesians 3:16.
I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being.
What a wonderful verse this is! This is Paul's prayer for the church at Ephesus. He is praying that God will strengthen them, not by the addition of superhuman muscles, but by the power of the Spirit. This is not a physical strengthening but a spiritual one. It is for the strengthening of the inner man, the heart, the soul.
Let's have a look at what this power can do.
1. It gives power to rebuke sin.
Micah 3:8 says this:But as for me, I am filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.
2. It brings healing to the lives of many.
Acts 19:11 and 12 says this: God did extraordinary miracles through Paul. Even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.
3. It gives God's people the ability to speak with authority.
We read in Acts 4:33 these words: With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and much grace was upon them all.
I am sure that just by looking at those few verses, we have a clear picture of the power and strength being spoken of here. There is nothing human about it. It does not come from the build of a man or his status or standing. It is the power of the Spirit that Jesus had upon Him as He came out of the waters of baptism and also when he returned to Galilee. The power of the Spirit is given for a specific purpose. It is to help God's people to do the things that Jesus did, and more!
Why do you think so many people these days need therapy, counseling and prescriptions? It is because we were not designed to walk through this life under our own steam! We are each born to belong to God and live by the power of His Spirit.
What are YOU struggling with today?
WHY do you struggle in your own strength?
Matthew 11:30 says this: My (God's) yoke is easy and my burden is light.
It is. But only when we trust the Spirit's power in our walk with the Lord.
Consider today how much of your life you are trying to manage on your own.
'Juggling' and 'struggling' are not 21st Century ministries! They are 21st Century BURDENS. Give your whole life to God today and ask Him to fill you with the power of the Spirit in your inner being.
Then you'll know that whatever He asks you to do, you will do it with power and anointing!

Galatians 3:16
The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The scripture does not say 'and to seeds' meaning many people, but 'and to your seed', meaning one person who is Christ.
I can't reflect on this verse and really do it justice as a short reflection but I feel that missing it out for that reason would be wrong, so I would like us to have a look at it anyway.
Right back in the book of Genesis chapter 12 we can read about the 'call of Abram'. (God changed his name later on to Abraham but I will use it through the reflection to avoid confusion).
The Lord tells Abraham to leave his country, his people, and his father's household and go to a land which he will show him. Then the Lord makes a promise to Abraham. He promises the following things if Abraham will be obedient:
1. I will make you into a great nation.
2. I will bless you.
3. I will make your name great.
4. You will BE a blessing.
5. I will bless those who bless you.
6. I will curse anyone who curses you.
7. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
Now most of these can be considered as physical blessings, but in fact, if we were to go back to the literal translation, Paul's words to the Galatians actually also include spiritual blessings.
Let's look at it this way:
God was asking Abraham to leave the settled land he was accustomed to and make a 'pilgrimage' to a land not yet shown to him. In other words, this was a journey of faith!
Abraham had to be OBEDIENT to be able to inherit the promise of blessing. And the blessing was not for the 'seeds' of Abraham, but 'the seed'. And it clearly states that the 'seed' of Abraham is Christ.
So the promise of spiritual blessing is extended to those who have salvation through Christ. It cannot be inherited through family or any other human association. Blessing is for those who know Christ. And as those who know Christ will testify, it is a walk, a pilgrimage, of faith just as it was for Abraham.
Those who follow Christ must trust Him for direction in all areas of life. It's not the easy path! But it IS the way of blessing.
Where are you today? Are you on a journey which is full of temporal blessings that could be taken from you at any time?
Are you on a journey which keeps taking you to a crossroads and never any further?
Consider this:
If Abraham had chosen RESISTANCE he would not have received blessing. But because he chose OBEDIENCE, he walked out of familiarity into a PLACE OF FAITH and was blessed.

2 Corinthians 3:16
Whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
If we read Exodus 34:33-35, we will see that the veil spoken of was used to cover the face of Moses so that the Israelites would not see the fading of the glory on his face after returning from the temple.
Moses' relationship with God was something that even his own brother and the people of Israel were fearful of.
This is what Paul was alluding to in our verse for today. He actually says in verse 14 that to this day the same veil remains. The veil that prevented the people from recognising the old covenant under the law is still obscuring the vision of today's people. Only when Christ enters into the heart of man will that veil be removed and the truth of the gospel of Christ will become a radiance and light to the people who accept Him. That is the difference between being under the 'old covenant' which was the law and the 'new covenant' which was brought through Jesus death and resurrection.
Is there a veil obscuring your vision and stopping God's radiance from illuminating your life by the truth of the Word of God? Are you a follower of Christ who is perhaps 'comfortable right where you are' and not desiring to deepen your relationship with Him?
Or are you perhaps praying for someone and you are aware that the person is being 'veiled' from the truth. Their vision of the truth is dimmed and they are unable to see that Jesus loves them and died for them too.
Whichever situation you identify with, pray that this veil will be removed in Jesus name.
If you are already a Christian, ask God to forgive you for 'covering your face' so you could not see the things he wants to show you.
If you need to give your life to Christ, ask Him to forgive you for not living your life for Him and ask Him to illuminate the Bible for you so you can clearly see what the scriptures say.
If praying for an unbelieving friend or family member, pray that the 'veil' will be torn away by the power of the Holy Spirit and light will penetrate the spiritual eyes of the one you are praying for.

1 Corinthians 3:16
"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you."
This chapter began with Paul speaking to the church at Corinth. They were Christians, but still very immature, so he referred to them as 'still worldly' and not spiritual. He had recognized jealousy and quarrelling among them and said they were acting like 'mere men'.
When we come to verse 16 Paul is questioning their ability to recognize who and what they really are.
Many people think that when Paul refers to them as 'God's temple' that he means each one individually is a temple of the Holy Spirit. But in the literal translation of this verse he is describing 'them, as a gathering of Christians' as being the temple. It is only in chapter 6 verse 19 that we find Paul speaking to people on an individual basis about being a temple of the Holy Spirit.
God dwelt in the Jewish temple. He resided there and a glorious cloud could be seen as a token of His presence.
We must consider what this means to Christians today. How do we define God's temple or God's church?
Well, the 'church' is not a building. It isn't a denomination. That means it's not the Methodist church, the Baptist, the Presbyterian or Roman Catholic or in fact any building with the word 'Church' above the door. The church of God is His people. Those who belong to Him by virtue of the blood of Jesus Christ. Now, that may upset some people, but I think God is probably the one who is most upset. What God wants is a church without quarrelling, without division or factions or jealousy. He wants the church to be pure and holy. He desires a church where the Holy Spirit can dwell and not be grieved.
We have much to learn. A long way to go. The divisions in the church, the body of Christ, today, is wreaking havoc throughout the world because we are failing to give God His rightful place, which is at the head of His church. How can the Holy Spirit dwell in so soiled and fragmented a temple.
I would like to suggest something which some of you may already be familiar with, and others not. I believe, personally, and it is only my opinion, that we, as believers and called the church or temple of God, should regularly ask God's forgiveness for the sins of the church. When we see people fall from grace, when we hear of ungodly decisions made by so called 'heads of the church' I feel we should do more to show how sorry we are for letting God down as His holy temple. We should be asking forgiveness as 'a body'. A body we are supposed to build up and not tear down!
So let's ask this question today:
Lord of the church,your saved and blood washed people, what can I do to see restoration come to your temple so it can be what You so desire it to be - a body of followers and worshippers who are filled with Your Spirit and walking in Your divine grace.

Romans 3:16
"ruin and misery mark their ways"
This may not be the most exciting verse you've ever read!! In fact it's almost verging on depressing, but there is still something we can take from it, so let's have a closer look.
The heading which this verse comes under just before verse 9 is "No-one Is Righteous".
Paul is giving this stark picture so he can show what a complete contrast there is between the righteousness of God and the awful sin of mankind. Romans 3:23 says "for we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God".
When I read our verse for today I realized 2 things about people who are heading down the wrong path.
1. Seeing ruin and misery in a person's life is a mark of the way they live NOW. In other words, 'their ways', their lifestyle, their standards all point to destruction. They live in misery. In fact there can be no worse state to live in than to be a slave to your own sin. It is totally self-destructive.
The truly sad thing is that these people don't only cause misery and destruction to themselves but to their families, communities, and as we can see from newspapers and television, nations as well.
2. Their lifestyle, if not brought to a halt, will continue in this way. Their path in life will be 'marked out' by misery and ruin. They will follow and be led to the things that will eventually destroy them, not just until their death but beyond.
Now I realize that not everyone who lives outside of the kingdom of God is a terrible, unlawful,destruction-indulging hopeless case. When Paul wrote these words he was talking about the Jews and Gentiles. He was saying we are all under sin if we do not know God. There is no-one better than anyone else. There are things inherent in us all that, if not washed away by the blood of Jesus, will overtake our lives and bring us misery. Things as small as thoughts!
All sin begins this way.
I'd like to encourage you today to spend a little time with God. If you are saved by the blood of Jesus, give God thanks with all of your heart and pray that those who do not know Him will find the way of peace. Call a halt to the spirit of misery and destruction that seems to so freely sweep this land, and ask God to use you as a peacemaker and winner of souls.

Lord, I lift up to you today all who struggle with everything from bombarding thoughts to destructive addictions. That is not your plan for anyone. Only a few days ago we were reminded of John 3:16. I pray that verse over everyone today who is losing their footing on their chosen path. Lead them to the paths of peace. And just in case I've forgotten to say this lately............use me Jesus!!

We're now in Acts 3:16.
"By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through Him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see."
Healing is a huge subject in the Christian world and often a controversial one at that, so I'm not going to go into it today. There is something else I want to show you.
Peter and John were going to the temple at a designated time for prayer. A man was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from the people going in to the temple courts.
He saw Peter and John approaching and asked them for money. Peter looked at the beggar and said, "I have no silver or gold, but what I do have I will give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, WALK!"
And the man got up and walked.
Soon afterwards Paul was talking to the onlookers and asked them why they were so amazed at this happening. He reminded them that they had handed Jesus over to be killed. They had disowned Him. But although they had killed Him He had been raised from the dead and it was His power that was at work in the beggar. It wasn't any power that Peter had. It was faith in Jesus Christ.
They had seen with their own eyes that in Jesus name the beggar had been healed. As soon as Peter helped him to his feet, it says his feet and ankles became strong and he began to walk.
I've just finished writing the Courage4Life article that this week is about loneliness. It struck me as I was looking at our verse for today that many people are crippled in their own way. They have issues, ailments, addictions and pain that stop them from being able to stand on their own two feet. Often these people are referred to as 'dysfunctional', social outcasts, misfits and much worse. In their own way they are beggars because they watch people pass them day after day, sometimes looking away, other times shaking their heads, yet all the time having what these people need. The Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
I know it's hard to reach these people. To be honest I am sometimes afraid of them, especially if substance abuse is their issue, but I never lose hope that one day they will come to know the Lord.
Healing doesn't always show up in the knitting together of bones. It is just as dramatic and real when it shows up in the cleansing and saving of a soul. Or when a kind and quiet word just softens someone's heart, even for that moment. We have within us the power to create a smile, to dry a tear or lift a weary head. Silver or gold cannot make a life whole or eternal. That must come by the way of faith in Jesus and those of us who know Jesus must offer Him, with open hands, to all whose lives have been crippled by circumstances beyond their control, or those that simply got out of control.

Dear heavenly Father, I thank you that there is power in the name of Jesus. I know it is by faith that people get freed. I realize there are people who need a special kind of healing. The strength to stand on their own two feet. Help me to offer them Jesus, but also give me discernment so I do not put myself in a difficult or dangerous situation. I give you thanks Lord because you have such a love for all people. Something I'm learning little by little. Walk with me so I can help others to walk. In Jesus Name. Amen.

Today we continue our "3:16" journey to Luke 3:16. John answered the people," I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire".
John was speaking to a people who were eagerly awaiting Christ and even wondered in their hearts if John could in fact be Him. But John was sent to 'prepare the way' for the Messiah. So he could have, if he was that way inclined, begun to recite all the 'do's' and don'ts' of how to be a follower of Christ. But instead he 'introduces them' to Christ in a way that would leave them in no doubt as to what was expected of them.
John had the authority to baptize. What he didn't have was the power to change these people's lives, even though they may have thought he could. So waht he does is, he switches their expectations from what HE could do for them to what Christ will do for them, and in doing so, encourages them strongly to repent, receive forgiveness for their sins and follow Christ.
What's so poignant about this is, John explains very clearly what is going to happen by saying, 'I baptize you with water, but Christ will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire'.
The Holy Spirit doesn't just wash people in the way that water washes off external dirt on the body. The Holy Spirit is sent to purge, cleanse and sanctify deep within the soul. It's good to note here that this type of cleansing can only be achieved through the Holy Spirit. We cannot be cleansed in this way by a vicar, priest or any church leader. It is only by the power of the Spirit.
And John also says that Christ will baptize with fire! A lot of people think this is the type of fire that actually 'fires up Christians to be powerful witnesses and speakers and evangelists etc.' But the word 'fire' here translates more closely with 'judgement'. It's the fire that will burn up the chaff, but not the wheat. In the verses following verse 16 John speaks about this fire as 'unquenchable'. My heart leapt when I read that because I realised that it doesn't matter how much we fight against it, run from it, throw things at it or stamp on it, it's not going to go out or be removed. The Holy Spirit is sent to 'sanctify', the fire is sent to 'separate'. The Lord wants wheat that He can gather into His barn, not chaff that is only worth being burned to ashes.
Be sure of what you are. There's no middle ground here. You can't be a 'chaffy kind of wheat' or a 'wheaty kind of chaff'. You've got to be sanctified and separated because Christ is coming and He seeks a purified people. Hhhhhmmm. I've just had a thought. Does this mean that Jesus is about the only person I know who doesn't suffer from wheat intolerance?

Most people are familiar with the words of John 3:16. For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, so that whoever would believe in Jesus would never perish but would have eternal life.
An amazing verse that has undoubtedly changed saved and changed the lives of millions of people.
But I wonder if you realize just how exciting some of the other "3:16" verses to be found in the Bible really are. Over the next 18 days ( time will fly, I promise!!) I'd like us to go on a journey through the New Testament to discover some more memorable scriptures. I think we may have quite an exciting journey!!
So we begin at Matthew 3:16. As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him.
The first thing to notice here is that Jesus was baptised! The Son of God and a man without sin who did not require repentance or cleansing, went through the waters of baptism in obedience to God. Not only for that reason though. By being baptised, Jesus completely identified Himself with the sins and failures of man and in that demonstration became our substitute.
Let's take a quick look at 2 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 21: God Himself made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.
He did it as an example to those who would follow Him.
As soon as Jesus was baptised, He went out of the water and at THAT MOMENT heaven was opened and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him.
Notice how it says, 'At that moment'. There was no waiting around for someone to come over with a nice fluffy Egyptian cotton towel to dry Him, or for someone to sit down upon the shore and remove the sand from between His toes. No! As soon as He came out of the water, having shown His obedience to His Father, all of heaven opened up and the Holy Spirit came down and rested on Him. As with the baptism, the dove of the Spirit was not sent to overcome sin. Jesus was without sin. The Holy Spirit came to EQUIP Jesus for the work He would do as the Messiah sent from God.
You know why I find this so exciting? It's because as 'followers' of Jesus, baptism is as powerful a witness now as it was back then. It is a statement of faith demonstrated by a physical act of obedience to God. It is also the same Holy Spirit that descends upon us as descended on Jesus when we choose to do the work of God in the name of Jesus. There is surely nothing more liberating to the Christian than that.
Being a Christian is not easy. The work is often difficult and the journey heavy going! So how can we use this verse to help us? Well, consider these things:
Do you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you are a Christian, born again and washed in the blood of Jesus?
Have you considered being baptised? Acts 2:38 shows us it is a command rather than an optional extra!
Are you truly aware of how powerful the Holy Spirit of God really is? Jesus needed it to do the work set out before Him. Are you filled with the same Spirit? Do you know you walk in the Spirit's power?
If you have time today, read this verse over to yourself and consider its power and significance for your life. And if you know this little chorus, sing it with all your heart:
I have decided to follow Jesus

Yes, it's a crane!! Read on. All will be revealed!
1 Colossians 1 verse 13.
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
This is the last of the reflections on Colossians for the moment and what a great verse to finish on!.There are three words I'd like to elaborate on: RESCUED, RE-BIRTHED and REDEEMED.
First, RESCUED.
I have always admired people who's work involves the rescue of others, even those who are dedicated to rescuing animals. There's just something about the act of rescuing that appeals to me. I remember years ago sitting on a bus on my home from town. The bus was still parked in it's stance and out of the corner of my eye I could see a crane beginning to lift something out of the sea. It turned out to be a fisherman! He had apparently been to the pub across the road, had a few more than he should have and as he was trying to board his fishing boat his foot slipped between two other boats and he fell into the sea. I felt completely overwhelmed, realizing this man had been RESCUED from more than just his unexpected 'dip', and I cried all the seven miles home! The tears were those of a very thankful heart because the man had been given another chance to somehow hear the gospel and get rescued from his sin. And even to this day, twenty four years later I sometimes still pray for those in need of rescuing by saying:'Lord, send me the sinking and I'll be the crane!
Always thank God that you're rescued.
This verse goes on to say that we have been " brought into the kingdom of Jesus Christ, the son He loves." If we've accepted Jesus as our Saviour we have gone through a process of RE-BIRTH. Of course it is a 'spiritual re-birth. Remember Nicodemus asking Jesus about re-birth. "How can this be", he said. "Can a man really enter again into his mother's womb?" And Jesus replied, "No on can enter the kingdom unless he is born of water and the Spirit."
That is why it is impossible to be a Christian just by being born,christened, confirmed or by religiously going to church. Believe in the Lord simply because He is the loving Father who gave us His Son so that we could live in His blessing on earth. Seek to be redeemed. God will meet you at your point of need.
Are you living in the freedom of the Spirit?

And today we continue in Colossians chapter 1:11b-12. ...and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.
Let's start with the words, "joyfully giving thanks to the Father." Remember a few days ago we were considering the difference between joy and happiness. And I said that I believe happiness is a state of mind and joyfulness is a state of being. Happiness is inconsistent and depends on circumstances but joy is abiding and is based on salvation. Paul is saying here, give thanks to God with that inner joy that comes from knowing Him. And if we're really struggling to feel joyful and full of praise, the next part of this verse will help to remind us what God has done for us through Jesus: "the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light".
If God is our Father and Christ is our Saviour we have been qualified to share in His kingdom. It's a qualification that doesn't become outdated or lose it's usefulness as we come to the end of our working life. It gives us the right to share in the inheritance of the saints, and that inheritance includes eternal life with God. Millions of people in the world these days do not even have a life, never mind eternal life!
And Paul finishes off here by mentioning the kingdom of light. That is where the saints' inheritance lies. The word 'kingdom' here actually doesn't mean 'place' or 'territory'. It translates as 'the authority, rule or sovereign power of a king'. So here it means that a Christian is no longer under the domain of evil ( darkness) but has come under an authority which brings light and life.
Studying this verse has made me realize something. As a Christian, I should seize every opportunity to invite people to experience true joy! I should give thanks to God more than I do now. And I should tell people who are as yet outside of the kingdom of God that a warm welcome awaits them there!

Colossians 1 verse 11b "......so you may have great endurance and patience"
Paul is still talking here about being strengthened with all power according to God's glorious might. He continues by saying, " so that you may have great endurance and patience"
There doesn't seem to be a lot of it around these days. Endurance and patience. People want everything yesterday and they'll put themselves in great debt just so they don't have to wait. Families are suffering because there's no endurance in relationships and marriage any more. Agreements are drawn up beforehand so that everything is in place ready for the disagreements!
Paul is encouraging the Colossians in their faith. What he's saying is that when you fully trust in God and get to know His Word and the directions it gives for daily living, then you'll be able to endure.Remember Paul's words in 2 Timothy 2v5: If anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. If we want to endure life's race and come out as champions of the faith, we have to learn that our strength to run comes from our knowledge of God's rules for our lives.
I do believe that the older generation knew far more about patience and endurance than today's younger generation. Why? Because they knew their God. There was no easy fix. Nothing came easy to them. Things weren't disposable, they were made to last. And faith was treasured and nurtured.
Our worship to God is good and right, but our relationship WITH God is what strengthens us and sees us through our trials.
Are you finding it hard to be patient and to endure life's calamities? Can I just encourage you as Paul encouraged the church at Colosse. Get to know God and His will for your life. This will strengthen you day by day. Being dependent on His strength you will come to experience patience and endurance beyond what you could ever imagine. Be a spiritual athlete, endure the race, remembering the rules as you patiently strive to win.
Can I encourage you to read through chapter 1 of Colossians. Take your time with it if you can. It will really bless you. May you know God's strength more and more as you seek His will for you.

Yesterday we looked at Colossians chapter 1 verse 10 and today we move on to verse 11 which says, ".....being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might....."
Have you ever in a moment of sheer frustration uttered the words, "Give me strength!!" I have. Frequently! And if I don't say it I think it! It doesn't actually give me strength saying it, but it feels good for a moment or two!
Paul, in this letter to the Colossians, shows himself to be very Christ-centred. He uses the title "Christ" 26 times and the title "Lord" seven times. Paul is assured of where his strength comes from. Remember he wrote to the church at Ephesus and told them to 'put on the armour of God'. Why? Because the battle gets tough and whether we realize it or not, we are in a spiritual battle that demands a strength 'not of this world'.
I am sure you can think of times, maybe even today, when your strength is low, your body weak or your spirit broken. Then there will be days when you feel a little stronger. Things will seem a little less chaotic or dishivelled and hope will spring in your heart once more.
But Paul spoke of 'being strengthened with all power according to His (God's) glorious might'. Paul spoke from experience. He knew that our 'being strengthened' has nothing to do with our efforts to put our best foot forward or keep a stiff upper lip! But it has everything to do with 'God's glorious might'. Imagine that! Grasp it! We have a God who created the world, flung stars into space, spoke water into oceans and commanded light to shine. And some of us still struggle with getting up and 'being us' until, at the end of another day, we fall into bed and say, "Give me strength"!
Just to show you that I'm speaking to myself as well here, not just trying to help anyone else that may be struggling, I bought a notebook at the shop today. Didn't have a clue what I was going to use it for. I just have to buy notebooks! But it's now become 'my little red book'. In it I am going to list things that especially come to mind that I need to trust God's strength for. For instance, I have a neighbour who has had a tragic life. He married and his wife died of cancer. He married again. His second wife died of cancer. He married again. His third wife died of cancer in his arms.
I can only help this man by being there for him, praying for him and introducing him to Jesus. But I need God's strength to do that. I can't do this one on my own.
That was just an example. The truth is, we all need God's strength every day of our lives. Don't settle for candlelight strength when you can have the whole of Heaven's glory fall upon you through the mighty power of God's strength. Let's pray together.

Father, what an awesome God You are. I come before You now and I want to say sorry for the times I've dug my heels in, thinking I can do it all my 'big' self. And then I keel over, all heels up and hurting, and where do I come to? Your feet! Why? Because I know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, YOU are my strength and my guide. And I can come to you with my worries and troubles. My fears and my tears. And my notebook filled with the precious and their pain. But you never say, "I told you so." You say, "I HOLD you so!" And God at that moment, I cherish the cross! My strength and my salvation! O Lord, my Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth. Amen.

Following on from yesterday we are in Colossians chapter 1 verse 10.
And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.
Paul is my hero!! I love the way he says things. Look at this one today! You know what really impressed me? It was the fact that Paul incorporated 'bearing fruit' and 'growing in the knowledge of God' in the same breath! What are we without the knowledge of God in our lives? TWIGS! Dried up unfruitful twigs!( For reasons obvious to those who know me I would love to be called 'Twiggy'!! ) But as Christians who are seeking to be filled with the knowledge of God, we are without doubt going to bear fruit.
Fruit, as we know by doing our shopping, comes in all shapes, colours and sizes. Spiritual fruit, which is what Paul is talking about, is a little bit the same.( Perhaps without the lemons!) We can be fruitful in our witnessing, in winning souls, in speaking the Word, in seeing answers to our prayers. And let's not forget - being fruitful in our Christ-like character. All of these are important, and they will all be enhanced by our growing in the knowledge of God.
How's your fruit looking? Fresh? Healthy? Abundant? Or has it been a dry season for you and it's all looking a bit past it's sell by date?
That's ok! Spend a little time each day with the Master Gardner. Check out His Gardening Manual, also published under the name 'The Bible'! Grow in His knowledge yourself, then put it into practice and the fruit will follow. If ever the world needed good spiritual fruit, it's now!
Be encouraged, God is faithful, and His Word at work in us will always bear fruit!

For the next five days we're going to be in Colossians chapter 1. Paul exalts Christ to the Colossians because he was trying to refute their heresy. In verse 9 he says this: "we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will."
Many people these days subscribe to 'lifelong learning'. That's good. Education and knowledge are good for the mind and can be a real confidence booster. Not to mention the impact that degrees and diplomas have on your CV!
However, Biblical knowledge is not merely the possession of facts. Knowledge and wisdom from the Bible is not there to swell our brains but to steer our path. Having been created by God for a purpose we must use His handbook, the Bible, to find the Godly purpose for our lives. To be filled with the knowledge of God's will must be the greatest confidence booster this side of heaven! And I don't mean 'confident' in a cocky way. I simply mean that to know what God wants us to do in life is such a comfort as well as a revelation that we feel strong enough to put our best foot forward as a result!
Do you know what God has in store for you? Have you consulted Him and His Word.
Look at the image above. It shows car tyre marks skidding out of control between the verges.
Does that resemble the drive of your life?
Shift down a gear or two and take your road of life slowly for a while. Consult the handbook and the map! ( The Bible )
Ask God to show you exactly what he wants you to do. Move over to the passenger seat. Sit back and allow Him to take control.

CAUTION! WORK IN PROGRESS!
I was reading Philippians today and saw something that spoke to me and I want to share it with you. (You probably noticed it years ago!!)
The first verse we're looking at is Philippians chapter 1, verse 6: ".....being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ".
The second verse is Philippians 2 verse 12: ".....continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling".
We become Christians when we accept Jesus into our lives as Lord and Saviour. We have to invite Him. Being a Christian does not happen automatically when we are born, christened, confirmed or baptized. It is a conscious decision when the realization that Jesus died for us becomes a reality to us and our response is to ask Him to come into our lives. Once we do that, He will begin to WORK IN us. It's something that is ongoing. It's not a case of, "Now I'm saved I'm well behaved!!!" We have to ALLOW the Lord to work in us so that our character begins to become more like His. So what do we do while He's doing that? Do we just sit back and let Him get on with it?
No! We continue to WORK OUT our salvation while He is WORKING IN us!
It is up to us to read the Bible, pray, seek fellowship and actively pursue the will of God in our lives. We have to do that so our salvation can become complete. We should do it with reverence and respect. That doesn't mean we can't enjoy life. In fact, the more we pursue God the more we will enjoy the life that HE has mapped out for us.
So today, let's spend a few minutes in prayer, acknowledging that Jesus is always working IN us as we work OUT our own salvation. Ask God to keep reminding you that the relationship is a two way thing. Working in and working out.

A PRAYER OF TRUSTING
Father God, thank You for Your deep love for me, which I sometimes ignore and other times take for granted. I give You praise for the way You keep Your promises to me and always try to lead me in paths that will strengthen and guide me, bringing me peace and joy and love.
Today I ask You Lord to walk close to me as I feel a little unsteady and I'm afraid my feet may slip. It's just the worry of everyday things. They have a habit of overtaking me when I'm caught off guard. When I forget to take up my spiritual armour that Paul spoke about in Ephesians.
See Lord, look at my hands. I am lifting them up to You. They're full of all my faults and insecurities, my fears and my ambitions. You know all about them Lord, but I want You to have them all. I know I need to empty my hands of all of those things so that You can work in my life and make me strong in spirit and courageous of heart.
It's nothing to You to take these upon Yourself. You have the whole world in Your hands and yet You still have time to share individual moments with all of us.
Father God, I give You my family and loved ones. I trust that You will uphold them and draw them nearer to Yourself. For what is life without Your love, and what is love without Your life.
Psalm 8:1 O Lord,our Lord. How majestic is Your name in all the world. Amen.



Friday 15th August

READINESS
This is the last in our spiritual trip to 'Loch NESS' and we are concluding with READINESS'!
Let's look at the book of James chapter 4 verses 7-8. ( I encourage you to read the whole chapter today if you can.)
James says, "Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you."
What struck me first of all about this passage of scripture is that James was actually talking to people who were already Christians, and yet, felt that they needed to be firmly reminded of some basic facts and actions corresponding to belief. At the time of writing these commands there were stated in Greek and called for immediate action in rooting out the sinful attitude of pride. We're going to look at them briefly, one at a time, and as we do so, let's take the challenge personally.
Submit yourselves to God then.
I've noticed as I've been involved in ministry and counseling that this is a hard task and often a long journey. I think it's particularly difficult for those who have come from a rebellious atmosphere within the family home or perhaps a domineering or violent relationship. The word 'submit' to those people can arouse some very strong negative emotions. Nevertheless, we must come to realize that God can only lead us into the fulness of life if we submit to Him all humility.
Think about your life. How much have you submitted to the Lord. Is there an excited readiness in your spirit to give yourself completely to Him?
Secondly, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Remember just last week we went through the armour of God and I was encouraging you to take up your armour and fight against the devil's plans. Here we are reminded again to show readiness as we take our stand in spiritual battle. Don't be caught fumbling with your faith shield when the arrows start to fly!!
Lastly, "Come near to God and He will come near to you. What is it we can sometimes be guilty of when we feel under attack? We run! We hide! Feel sorry for ourselves! Or the other one. You know it I'm sure. Stay well away from God and His Word in case we hear something we need to hear!!
Can I encourage you once again to submit to God and let Him heal you and use you. Can I stand with you as you show your readiness to fight the devil's schemes. And will you be ready, at any time of day or night to draw nearer to the God Who drew close to you and saved your life through the blood of Jesus.
READINESS - Because God can't work through a sleeping church.

GENTLENESS
Phillipians 4:5
Let your gentleness be evident to all.
Gentleness. Christlike consideration for others.
Headlines these days are dominated by war, cruelty, violence, murder, abuse and shameful neglect towards our fellow man.
We wonder why children go off the rails so much and so soon into their lives. But we just have to look at the TV and children's computer games to see that, rather than being influenced by their parents and peers showing love, respect and gentleness, they are brought up in an atmosphere of darkness, evil, violence and the horrifying consequences of substance abuse.
Of course there are still many happy, respectful, disciplined homes where children are nurtured and spouses remain faithful to their commitments. And we thank God for them.
So how do we begin to redress the balance? How do we try to bring gentleness to an aggressive world?
Going back to Philippians 4, have a look at verse 4 and verse 6, those on either side of our verse for today. I noted something interesting. In verse 4 Paul exhorts the church at Philippi to 'Rejoice'! In fact he repeats himself. 'I say it again. Rejoice!'
Then in verse 6 he continues by saying, 'Don't be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.' Notice how 'gentleness' is carefully encompassed by 'rejoicing' on one side and 'thanksgiving' on the other. That's no coincidence. Have you ever noticed that people who are thankful for the little things in life and recognise the blessings of the Lord are not aggressive by nature. Galatians 5:22-23 says, 'The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.'That means that for those qualities to be found in a person, the Spirit of God must also be found there.
Children are 'learning' agressive behaviour. You can't 'teach' gentleness.
Gentleness comes from God by way of the Holy Spirit and takes root in the fertile ground of a thankful heart. That is why, as Christians, we must promote the gospel "in its fulness" because the only way this world will change is by a spiritual change of heart.

JOYFULNESS
Today I would like to make a clear distinction between happiness and joyfulness.
It was interesting to note that when I looked in my Bible reference section I found 32 references relating to happiness, but when I looked up the word joyfulness and words relating to it eg 'joy', 'joyful' etc I found 235 references!
So what's the distinction between the two?
Well, I believe that happiness is a state of mind and joyfulness is a state of being. Just hold that thought there for a moment before continuing.
Happiness depends so much on how things are going for us.
We can be happy one day, unhappy the next. Happy when the bank balance is in the black, but unhappy when it changes to red. A lot like sitting at traffic lights really
Red - not happy! Amber - slight uplift on the corners of the mouth! Flashing amber - grin at the driver of the car beside yours! Green - Happy! Happy! Happy!
Until of course, a little further up the road you find a traffic jam and the whole happiness scale is thrown into confusion.
Happiness is a state of mind. Always changing. Dependent on life going well. Happiness is shallow. It's only ever as real as the smile that it 'plonks' on your face!
Joyfulness on the other hand is not dependent on 'stuff' and nice things happening. Real joy is borne out of the hope that God gives us through Jesus Christ. When we know that our lives are in His hands, and we have eternal hope that comes through faith in Him, then, and only then, can we know what it is to be joyful.
Joyfulness is not a surface grin. It is more like a spiritual gene.
Nehemiah 8:10 says,'The joy of the Lord is your strength'.
That doesn't mean that Christians won't have 'traffic light' situations. Often Christians come under more 'attack' than those who do not believe. That's why having joy is so important, because when things are going wrong we do not have to rely on 'the feeling of happiness', we can experience the reality of 'abiding joy'.
Even Jesus received His joy from the Holy Spirit.(Luke 10:21) Joy is not an emotion based on a situation. It is a state of being based solely on a relationship with God.
What are you experiencing in life right now?
Does happiness visit you now and again, or does joyfulness inhabit you, staying deep inside you even when things are tough.
To grasp the reality of this could change your life forever.

CONTENTEDNESS is our theme today and we are going to look at Paul's writing to the church at Philipi. So we turn to Philipians chapter 4 and verses 10 - 13.
Paul is rejoicing in the fact that the Philipians are once again showing their concern for him by sending him gifts. Whilst he is appreciative of these gifts he is keen to let them know that he is in no way dependent on them. And this is what he says to them:
"I have learned to be CONTENT whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned THE SECRET OF BEING CONTENT in every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me."
That's quite a bold statement and one that perhaps took the Philipians a bit by surprise, having just given gifts to Paul!
Now, if you were to look up the word 'content' in the dictionary, you would probably find something like this:
'satisfied with things as they are'.
But I believe Paul uses this word with a slightly different slant on it.He says, 'I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances'.
The reason I wouldn't use the above definition of the word 'content' in this context is because for Christians it is not so much a case of 'being satisfied with things as they are', but more a case of 'living in union with Christ I have no need to feel dissatisfied with my life.'
In other words, Paul was content because he was fulfilled. It didn't matter if he had plenty to eat or nothing to eat or whether he was experiencing poverty or wealth. His contentedness came from a source much deeper than any that could be measured by worldly standards.
Unfortunately, we live in times when 'having everything IS everything'!
It's seems a bit strange then that if 'stuff' makes a person so happy, why is it that celebrities can't even look in the mirror without making an appointment to have their face 'perked up' by a chemical injection!
You cannot find contentedness at the bottom of a bank statement, in any one of the rooms in a fabulous mansion house or even on the top rung of the social ladder.
The Bible says 'Don't store up treasures on earth. Make sure your treasure is stored up in heaven. (Matt 6:19)
Paul knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that this earth holds nothing of value because he had something so precious, no amount of riches could take it away. He knew Jesus and that was his treasure.
Are you content with life? If not, ask yourself why?
If you think you are dependent on earthly things to make you content, think seriously of what that really means.
If you are already a Christian but still feel there is something missing, take a few moments to reflect on what is important to you.
Paul said,'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me'.
That included knowing how to be content!

( Apologies to anyone who logged on sooner and found no daily devotional. This was due to the server being down last night and I was unable to access the web building page.)
Today we are staying on our spiritual journey to 'Loch NESS' and will be looking at AWARENESS.
The main thing to note about awareness is this:
to have awareness you must first have 'an "AWAKENING".
Your eyes have to be opened. And because we're dealing with 'spiritual awareness', so also you should experience a spiritual awakening. That comes from first of all accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour (becoming a Christian)and secondly, continuing to seek the light of Christ in your life so you have a deeper awareness of how to live like Him and for Him.
Hosea 4:6 says this: my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.
How true that is today. People are so unaware of God, the gospel and the love, power and salvation that comes through believing in Him. They are also unaware of sin, which is leading them into a life of destruction, unfulfullment and ultimately death without Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:14 'sheds a little light on this':- "For it is light that makes everything visible. That is why it said, 'Wake up sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you. Be careful then how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil'".
This illustration may help you see where you are in all this.
Every night before I go to bed I put a blanket up at the window and also some black plastic bags. It's not attractive, but it's effective. You see, when the light starts shining on me I will wake up. And at this time of year that would mean waking up too early. I want to stay asleep!! So I control the amount of light that reaches me. In the morning, I take the blanket down again, because I am ready to wake up and start the day.
I would like to encourage you to think about darkness and light in your life. How spiritually aware are you each day? Perhaps you're still living in darkness, completely unaware of God's grace and salvation. Or you may be a Christian but you are the one controlling how much light penetrates your life.
If ever the world needed Godly awareness it is now! Come to God in prayer and ask Him to shine His light on you.
Deal with the darkness in your life. Desire the awakening. Delight in the awareness because it will change the way you seek God, change the way you pray and it will open your eyes to God's way of thinking and living.

Today we're looking at 'faithfulness' and the scripture verses I'd like to draw your attention to can be found in 3 John.
Verses 3 and 4. We will come to them in a moment.
I'm sure we can all think of someone we would call 'faithful'. A faithful friend in times of trouble. A faithful carer who gives generously of their time. A faithful member of the church.
It's good to know faithful people. In a world where selfish ambition becomes a 'must have' lifestyle, it's nice to know that some people remain interested in the wellbeing of others.
Let's look at those 2 verses now.
3. It gave me great joy to have some brothers come to me and tell about your faithfulness to the truth and how you continue to walk in the truth.
4. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

This is the apostle John writing to Gaius, a Christian in one of the churches of the province of Asia. He must have been instrumental in Gaius's conversion to Christianity, as he refers to him as one of his 'children'. John expresses his joy at hearing about Gaius's faithfulness.
I want to draw attention here to what it was that Gaius was faithful to.
In verse 3 it clearly states his faithfulness to the truth.
That made me think very carefully about faithfulness and I'll tell you why.
Faithfulness in Christians can often be misunderstood. Why?. Because so often Christians are seen to be faithful. We can attend church 'faithfully'. Go to prayer meetings 'faithfully'. Visit those in need 'faithfully'.
Don't get me wrong. Those things are good and necessary. But let me show you what I saw here.
'The truth' is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Living Word of God. To be a Christian we are required to believe in Jesus, accept Him as our Saviour and walk in the truth of the gospel. It is when we do this that we become faithful in the way God wants us to be. Living and walking in the truth daily will make us faithful in all other areas of our lives.
We can not please God and win souls by carrying our Bible under our arm faithfully every Sunday!
But by carrying the Word of God in our spirit wherever we go and in whatever we do, then we will show true faithfulness.
Faithfulness is not a 'mechanical action.' It is a SPIRITUAL REACTION.
Be faithful to the truth first and all of the other things will have a much deeper impact.
Think about faithfulness today.



Saturday 9th August

I hope you've received something from the last few days of thinking about the armour of God.
For the next 7 days we're going on a journey to a spiritual "Loch NESS"! But we're not going to search for the 'monster'. We're going to seek the 'Master'.
We will sit by the waters of Holiness, Faithfulness, Awareness, Contentedness, Joyfulness, Gentleness and Readiness.
These are not in any order of importance. They are all important in our Christian lives. However, I have chosen 'holiness' first of all, because that is what we should aspire to, and all the others are vital signposts on our journey there.

One thing I would like you to notice about holiness is that it has nothing to do with being religious. Anyone can be religious but not know the Lord as He desires to be known, or walk the path He has set out for them. Unfortunately some Christians are still comfortable being religious and I feel strongly that this can often deter people from coming to know the Lord.
Religion does not bring about change or new life. It sows seeds of self-righteousness and confusion.

Holiness is not religiously going to church every Sunday so we can FILL THE CHURCH.
Holiness is reverently being filled daily with the Spirit of God so that we can BE THE CHURCH!

In Thessalonians 4 verse 13 we read this:
May He ( the Lord ) strengthen your hearts so that you will be blamess and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all His holy ones.

The word 'holy' here means 'set apart'( for God ).
Standing 'away from' worldly pleasures and human desire.
The Psalmist puts it beautifully in these words:
"Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. He will receive blessing and vindication ( a type of blessing )from God his Saviour."

Holiness is something we should daily work towards. We know we will never be perfect while still living in this earthly world, but God is seeking a people who seek after Him.
A people who desire holiness so much that they stop bowing down to any worldly idols, eg wealth, status, pride etc, and live to be "set apart" to honour God with every area of our lives.

Spend a few moments thinking about your life and your relationship with God.
Do you have a relationship with Him?
Is it on your terms or His?
Are you really looking to Him, to learn of Him, to become like Him?

Holiness.
Seek holiness.
Seek it with all of your heart, because God, Who is holy, is searching your heart.



Friday 8th August 2008
Ephesians 6:19-20
Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should
Over the last week or so we have been studying the 'armour of God' and have been encouraged to take it up and put it on.
Every piece is vital and we are not completely protected unless each piece is in place.We will always come under attack, sometimes more severe than others.
Paul asks the church at Ephesus to pray for him, so that whenever he opens his mouth he will speak the gospel of Christ, not in fear, but in power!
In fact he asks them twice. Just to make sure they'll pray, I presume!! I also think Paul was aware of the fact that, even wearing our spiritual armour, we can forget the power that God gives us to walk in, and it is all too easy to let fear reign where victory should abound!
I like what Timothy says in 2 Timothy 1 verse 6:
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (lack of self confidence), but a spirit of power, love and self-discipline!
That should be a revelation to all of us. We take up the armour and put it on. We ask people to pray that we might speak the things of God fearlessly, and, if that still seems too little, remember we have been given POWER to walk in God's ways and speak of His Son Jesus Christ, Who came to heal and save.
He has given us a spirit of LOVE because it's hard to love people by human nature alone. And we've been given a spirit of SELF-DISCIPLINE because again, if we rely on our flesh and wayward nature we will not be able to have order in our lives.
I feel encouraged by that. I have been trying to walk with my armour on this week. I have come up against several trials but I stood. And stood. And stood some more. I sang praise to God and felt His Spirit fall on me over and over again. In the circumstances I would not normally have been so 'at peace' about the things going on. But I claimed the Word of God as my own and just this morning saw one particular victory in Jesus mighty Name!
Be encouraged to stand your ground. People will be praying for you.Do not give in to a spirit of fear! It will only destroy you. It will take the words from your mouth and the fire from your heart.
Rise up in faith in the Name of Jesus. Claim every one of His promises and walk in His power with your sword of the Spirit, the word of God as your strength and guide.
Let's pray.
Father God, I give you my praise. Praise for what You have done in my life and praise for what You will do in the lives of others as I stand strong in Your power and love.Remind me that self-discipline reaps many rewards and will help me grow in my faith. Use me Lord when I open my mouth. Make me fearless. Show me victory. In Jesus Name. Amen

Ephesians 6:18
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
There are three things I would like us to take note of here.
1. Pray in the Spirit....
Prayer is not always easy. In fact it's possibly one of the most difficult disciplines of the Christian faith.
God loves to hear His 'children' pray, just as an earthly father loves to hear the voices of his children.
Sometimes we find it so hard to pray we are tempted to neglect this area of our Christian life. And it's too easy sometimes to dismiss it by saying, "I can't find the words", or "I can't find the time."
God is very aware of our weakness and doesn't like to leave us struggling on our own, so He gave us His Word and His Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us.
Read Romans 8:26. It tells us that the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf.
I love this image. (It's not me in the picture!!)
I feel it really helps me visualize me praying and the Spirit interceding.
He doesn't do our praying for us, but He helps by taking the words of our prayers and our wordless prayers, to God, who hears and answers them. Picture the Spirit of God gathering up your prayer offerings and holding them up to God. Special delivery and right on time!
2. We are to pray on all occasions with all kinds of prayers.
Well, that's a relief to know! We don't have find a quiet room, put a blanket over our head and leave a 'do not disturb' sign dangling from the door handle!! We can pray anywhere, anytime. At home, in the car, up a hill, feeding the goldfish..................absolutely anywhere!
And even better still, we can pray ALL KINDS of prayers. Prayers of thanksgiving, prayers for ourselves, desperate prayers, cheerful prayers, deep spiritual prayers, God bless granny prayers!
I know prayer is a serious thing, and I wasn't trying to make it sound like a frivolous pastime. But until we constantly remember that we are His children and he is our Heavenly Father, we may run the risk of trying to impress Him a little too much!
Remember it's not eloquence God desires. It's obedience.
3. Stay alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray for those who know the Lord as well as those who don't. Christians can face deep spiritual battles as they try to live the life God has given them through Jesus. There is warfare going on. The enemy will try to steal, kill and destroy every area of a Christian's life so they cease to be effective in witnessing and winning souls. Those who are bound and broken, need Christians who are free and powerful in Jesus to pray for them until they see their shackles fall to the ground. Let's pray.

Father God, I'm sorry if I sometimes let you down when it comes to praying. Thank you for reminding me that I am not alone when I speak to you. Holy Spirit I invite you to draw closer to me. I trust you with my prayers. I know you can make something beautiful from my fragmented offerings to God, and for that I give You the praise of all my heart. Amen.

Ephesians 6:17b.....and (take) the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God
We are reminded here once more that our battles are spiritual so our weapons must be spiritual too.
Let me show you what it says in 2 Corinthians 10 verses 4-5.
"The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.
In other words, Christians do not fight their battles with man-made ammunition.
It goes on to say:
"On the contrary, they have Divine power to demolish strongholds.
A STRONGHOLD is basically anything that has a STRONG HOLD over a person's life. It is usually something that affects the MINDSET to the point where that person is not strong enough in themselves to break free.
Some common strongholds are fear, bitterness, anger, inappropriate sexual behaviour, substance dependency, unforgiveness and unbelief. There are many others.
It goes on to say
"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ".
Again we see the problem lies is in the area of the MINDSET. It is there we first become bound. The mind becomes conditioned to polluted thoughts and the flesh gets fed by the consequences of those thoughts.
The enemy's (Satan's) whispers are sweet to the vulnerable.
"Try this drug. Just this once."
"Don't forgive that person, they really hurt you."
"Go on! Be angry! Lash out! It's ok!."
"It's just a computer image.......!"
Freedom will only come to those who take up the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, and use it to counter attack the evil that keeps them bound.
John 8:32 " Then you will know the truth ( the truth that leads to salvation) and the truth will set you free."
God wants us to make HIM our stronghold. To have our thoughts captivated by His Word, the sword of the Spirit.

Ephesians 6:17a
Take the helmet of salvation......
Salvation may seem to some like an 'old fashioned' kind of word. To others it may be a word you are totally unfamiliar with.
I remember as a child singing that great old hymn, "We have heard a joyful sound! Jesus saves!"
If you are unfamiliar with this term, you may want to ask the question, "Jesus saves us from What?"
I like to think of it this way:
When God creates a person, He places inside each one of us a 'spirit'. It's the place that makes us feel our 'conscience' and makes us aware of when we are doing something wrong. It can also make us feel other emotions too. Some people are more 'spiritually aware' than others.
The Bible says that God made man 'in His own image'. (Genesis 1:27)
That means we were designed TO BE LIKE HIM. To take on His characteristics, live the life He planned for us and eventually, when our earthly life is through, to join Him in Heaven for all time. What a great prospect that is!
The exciting thing about our spirit is that God intended it to be 'in tune' with His Spirit. Unless we have made the 'proper connection' with His Spirit, our lives cannot be totally fulfilled. Our spirits will be 'spiritually dead'!
But because God really wants us to have fullness of life He created a link between our spirit and His. That link is Jesus, and if we accept Jesus, we will become 'a Christian'.
God has given us a free will. A choice of whether to accept Jesus or not. (No one is 'automatically' born a Christian and it is not dependent on child baptism, confirmation or generational faith). The only way to God is through Jesus Christ (John 3:16). Jesus saves us from being separated from God. He is the One who helps us to live the life God planned for us. He brings salvation.
Your life may seem very good at the moment and you don't see the need to 'be saved'. But, with God, life would be even better because you would be living within His plan for you, and have the knowledge that after death your life is still just beginning! Salvation brings new life and eternal life. Please consider Jesus.
If you are already a Christian, can I encourage you to TAKE UP the helmet of salvation afresh today. Seeing it as part of your spiritual armour, remember a helmet protects the head, the brain, the eyes, the ears and the mouth. So often our eyes and ears especially 'take in' a lot of stuff that is not good for us. Things we see on TV. Things we hear on the news. Things we may read in newspapers and magazines. The world we live in today is not always pretty, savoury or even safe. Our minds can be subject to thoughts that are not from God. Those types of thoughts are always the hardest to conquer because our flesh is very quick to resort to 'our old self'! Try to daily protect yourself from 'taking in' ungodly things by 'taking up' your helmet of salvation, so you can be protected by the power of your salvation which comes from God through Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:16
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one
Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please God.
Impossible!
And when Paul spoke to the church at Corinth he said, "It is by faith you stand firm".
So when we're encouraged to take up the shield of faith it is for a very definite purpose.
1. Faith is something we cannot live our Christian life without.
2. Using our faith as a shield doesn't just help us to stand firm, it also keeps us safe when the enemy tries to attack.

The shield that the Roman soldiers carried was almost five feet tall, large enough to conceal a man behind it. The shield was covered in leather, a sturdy material. What I find interesting about the shield is that it could also be soaked in water for the purpose of extinguishing the fiery arrows that flew at the soldiers from the opposing enemy. So not only could they be covered by their shield, they had the added safety of being able to prepare their shield in such a way that as soon as a fiery arrow hit it, the weapon was made powerless.
Say this to youself: The enemy is POWERLESS against my faith!
The shield extinguished the flame. The leather of the shield then stopped the arrow from reaching the soldier.
What a wonderful visual example that is for us.
We know we will come under attack. We have an enemy, and it's right to acknowledge that.
But when we have FAITH that we can hold up like a shield against the enemy, then we are the ones who will have the victory.

So how can we keep our shield of faith strong and effective in battle?
Remember, faith comes by hearing the message ( Romans 10:17 )

The message is the good news that Jesus came to release people from captivity to sin.
Have you asked Jesus to release you from your sin?

The message itself is heard through the Word of God.
This can either be through reading the Bible or hearing the Bible taught by someone anointed by God to do so.

If you need faith and you've never asked the Lord jesus to come into your life, say the prayer at the end of today's word, then get in touch to say you've done it so that you can get the help and encouragement you need from that point on.

If you are a Christian but you feel 'under attack' at the moment and need to build up your faith, spend a little time each day reading the Bible and speaking to God about your worries.The book of Acts tells us about the miracles of Jesus and also reminds us of the presence of the Holy Spirit, so that may be an encouragement to you.

And now the prayer that will change your life.
Father God, I am beginning to learn about you. I know there is something missing in my life. I feel weak and empty and need direction. I've not always done the right thing.
I realize that You gave Your son Jesus for that very purpose. To wash away all the things I've done wrong. To forgive me for not trying to find out what YOU want me to do with my life. You created me, but I've created my own plan for my life.
I ask You to forgive me now.
I accept Your forgiveness and ask that Jesus would come into my life and show me how to live for You.
Help me understand Your Word, the Bible, so that I can quickly learn how to be a Christian and live by faith.
Thank You God. In Jesus name. Amen.

Ephesians 6:15
...with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace
In Isaiah 52:7 we are given imagery of a messenger running from the scene of a battle to bring news of the outcome to the waiting king and people.
The custom was to run barefoot.
But when Paul speaks about being clothed in the armour of God in preparation for a spiritual battle, the message of the gospel is connected in a very picturesqe and visual way with the protective and supportive footwear of the Roman soldier.
Protection and support. Allowing nothing to harm the feet in any way, but also supporting the feet.
Battles are sometimes fought over a long period of time. It's essential to be properly 'kitted out'!
There's a lot of standing and there's a lot of withstanding
Soldiers must be sure-footed.
The Hundred years War was a series of battles between England and France from 1337 to 1453. In all, 16 years. I can imagine there were a few blisters and bunions along the way!
Some other physical battles can take many years to resolve, eg 'toilet seat up? Or toilet seat down!
Have you fought that one lately?
But getting back to spiritual battles, I'd like to show you how this verse we are looking at today is translated in the 'Bible in Basic English'.
It says this:
"Be ready with the good news of peace as shoes on your feet".
Be READY with THE GOOD NEWS!
KNOW it! CHERISH it! Be COMFORTABLE with it!
When you go out, let it be a natural thing to DECLARE it!
Be FAMILIAR with it!
Make sure it is part of your spiritual dress code!
Feel at home with it, like you would a favourite pair of shoes.
The gospel of peace is a powerful spiritual weapon when we face the ungodly world we live in. I refer to it as 'ungodly' because there are so many so-called 'gods' and 'idols' getting people's attention these days that it is hard for Christians in the spiritual world to stand their ground and see the one and only True God lifted up and worshipped. Of course as we do this, we will come under attack and that is why we are putting on our armour this week.
How are your feet in the heat of the battle?
Are they protected?
Do they stand firm and sure?
If you feel a bit unsteady, just put your feet up a while. Meditate on the good news of peace, then get up once more, and walk in the assurance that this gospel brings peace, new life, hope and salvation ( not necessarily in that order!) to all who believe.
May God be with you in your walk with Him.

Ephesians 6:14b .....with the breastplate of righteousness in place
Continuing our look at the armour of God, today we are reminded that we should have the breastplate of righteousness in place.
Here again we can see that the warrior's defence is his character. If you look up Isaiah 59:17 you will notice that God Himself is described, in a symbolic way, as putting on a breastplate of righteousness when he goes out to bring about justice.
Psalm 2 speaks of one being shielded by God and receiving favour because of righteousness.
I have a smaill piece of paper in my Bible which clearly defines a righteous person.
Those who honour God and order their lives in all things according to His will. In every human relationship they faithfully fulfil the obligations that the relationship entails, remembering that power and authority are to be used to bless, not to exploit
That's not easy to do. To remain faithful in our everyday relationships. To stay true to the character of God and not go beyond those boundaries.
It's hard, but not impossible. Our righteousness can only come from God. We are to wear it like a breastplate, which is worn over the torso to protect vital organs from injury or attack.
As we have been talking about spiritual battles these last few days, we must remember that all of our spiritual armour comes from God.
So when we are in a position where we are honouring God and living our lives according to His will and plan for us, we can be protected in conflict, assault and battle.
It is much easier to withstand attack when we are poised, balanced and filled with God's power.
Ask God right now to fill you afresh with His power, and feel the breastplate of righteousness protect you.

Ephesians 6:14a
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist
You'll have noticed by now that as Paul is speaking to the people about being strong in the Lord and in His mighty power he has mentioned more than once about 'standing' and 'standing firm'.
You may think it strange that to be speaking of battle, he should be encouraging people to be so immobile, but there's a specific reason why he is doing this.
In this context, the imagery is not that of charging forward, invading or pressing in upon our enemy. No, we are shown quite clearly a picture of each individual soldier remaining in position, as it were, withstanding assault wearing the full armour of God.
I think what Paul was most probably saying was, "You don't have to waste your energy pushing your way into the enemy's camp! That's not your territory. God has taken you out of there! In the same way, the enemy has no right on your territory because it belongs to the Lord. The enemy will still come charging at you, trying to steal, kill and destroy, as we read about before. But if, as soldiers of the Lord, we are fully clothed in His armour, all we need to do is STAND STILL and proclaim the name of the Lord.
It is HIS POWER that allows us to stand against the enemy. We do not need to wear ourselves out charging into headlong battle. With God on our side, we can withstand any assault.
Notice the first piece of spiritual armour we are told to wear.
The belt of TRUTH buckled round our waist
Why are so many lives being ruined today? Because people are in confusion. Our minds are bombarded from all sides. Adverts, crazes, cults, 'must-haves', fashion accessories to name a few. You walk along any street on a busy day and you'd think there was a virus going round that makes a person's head fall off to the side! But it's just their mobile phone ruling their life as usual! It seems the world can't do anything unless it's bombarded with NOISE! And there's so much to EXPERIMENT with. There's no real TRUTH being taught.
So first of all, Paul says, put the belt of truth around your waist. In Bible times, soldiers used belts to gather their long flowing robes up into a safe position so they would not trip up or fall.
We put on the belt of truth for the same reason. So nothing makes us falter or fall down.
How steady do you feel today?
Are you confused with life or do you know the truth?
Ask God to strengthen you and reveal His truth to you.
Begin to stand your ground, whatever you're battling with and tomorrow we'll have a look at some more armour that can help us to stand firm.

Ephesians 6:11
Put on the full armour of God so that you can stand against the devil's schemes
Yesterday we began looking at Paul's teaching to the church at Ephesus about being strong in the Lord. Today we are encouraged to put on ' the full armour of God' so we can stand against the devil's schemes. How do we know what those schemes are? Well, in John 10 verse 10 we are told that the thief (in this case, an intruder to the flock), comes only to steal, kill and destroy.But the story is a representation of God's sheep (His people) and the thief( the enemy, or Satan).
If we put that into the context of our 21st century world, we can see the evidence of the thief among the sheep. The devil is still stealing, killing and destroying. He steals our peace, our confidence, our will power and much more. He tries to kill, or take the life out of, everything we live for. And he also destroys things we hold dear, eg the lives of our children and other loved ones, but much more as well.
But Paul encourages us to put on the full armour of God. Be dressed head to toe in all the things God has given us to stand against the destructives schemes of the devil. If we put on the armour daily, we will know the power of God. We will have what it takes to destroy the schemes of the devil who tries to take so much from us. Tomorrow we will begin to look at the armour of God in more detail. Today, think of areas in your life where you think the devil may be trying to steal, kill and destroy and get ready to put on your armour.

Ephesians 6:10
Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
Here Paul has been speaking to the church in Ephesus and has been drawing their attention to the 'unseen world'. He knows only too well that there is always a spiritual battle being fought in 'the heavenly realms'. This is something that the world we live in today seems all too reluctant to acknowledge, and, it would seem, is very rarely taught about. I like the way Paul puts these two statements into one sentence. Firstly, be strong in the Lord. Secondly, 'and in His mighty power'.
I think what Paul is saying is this:
Be strong in the Lord. Know that you KNOW Him. Don't be shaken by someone else's opinion or show weakness when they question your faith and beliefs. Secondly, to know God is to know His power. You can't know the power of God any other way. But you must also remain strong in that power, because without it, you will not be able to fight spiritual battles. I believe Paul said this in one breath because these two things should never be separated. Do you know God? Do you know about His power? How strong do you feel today?
